The graduate program in Microbiology is overseen by the Committee on Microbiology, comprised of faculty members whose research is relevant to microbiology. Graduate students may elect to work in any lab of a committee faculty member to complete their thesis research.
Any students interested in applying to the University of Chicago's Microbiology program should do so through the centralized UChicago Biosciences website.
Students are typically interviewed by faculty in the months of January and February for admission in autumn of that same year. Students are admitted according to recommendations made by the faculty of the committee and the faculty of the Biomedical Sciences Cluster. After arriving on campus, students are advised by the Graduate Advisor of the Committee on Microbiology regarding which classes they should take. Funding for Committee on Microbiology graduate students is Divisionally guaranteed through the first four years of study and is contingent on satisfactory degree progress, as determined by the degree-granting unit and the Divisional Office of Graduate Affairs. Every effort is made beyond the fourth year to provide financial assistance until the completion of the degree.
Applications for Fall 2024 entry will open in September, with a deadline of December 1, 2023.
